A collection
of arrangements of traditional breton tunes and composed pieces, in all
fifteen pieces written btween 1981 and 1996.
Both beginners and more experienced harpists are catered for. Apart from
“Yod Kerc’h”, I have not included many indications as to
the style of interpretation, to allow each player to develop his own style.
The best way to do this is to listen to as much traditional music as possible,
in all its forms.
In writing this collection, I have also intended illustrating the musical
traditions of one particular region of Brittany : le “pays d’A-Bas”
or “pays d’En-Bas” (around Questembert-Muzillac) where I
come from.
Maps of Brittany situate this region in Haute Bretagne, but the pays d’A-bas
is not strictly gallo-speaking, and the Breton language has not been spoken
here since the end of the 19th Century.
It is a border country where elements of the “gallèse”
tradition can be found in its singing styles, and the “vannetais”
tradition in its dances and biniou-bombarde playing during the period between
World Wars.
I would like to dedicate this collection to all those who have passed on
this inheritance, and particularly Adolphine Monnier and Marie Nicolas,
my Grandmother, for all the wonderful moments I spent collecting music
with them. I would also like to thank Philippe Blouët for his extensive
collecting work in the “pays d’A-Bas”.
