Open tuning
To play the tunes in this collection, your guitar should be tuned to the open tuning in D - D A D G A D - instead of the usual tuning E A D G B E.

If your guitar is not already tuned to these notes, you should lower the bass string and the two highest strings by one tone.

There are different open tunings. Here are some examples :
G minor open tuning : D G D G Bb D
C major open tuning : C G C G C E
D major open tuning : D A D F# A D

The modal open tuning of D A D G A D has more possibilities than the other examples because it allows you to play in D major, D minor, or in the D mode.
It is therefore more suited to traditional music which is generally modal.

This tuning is used by many guitarists in Brittany.
